Inachis io!

We were very excited to have spotted this beautiful butterfly early today! Not to mention that it sat still long enough for us to take some photos! The European Peacock Butterfly! Or its Latin name, Inachis io, is found in Europe and temperate Asia. As you can see the butterfly has markings on it's wings just like the Peacock bird. These are called eyespots and are meant to scare off predators. The Peacock is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful butterflies in the world!
