A small taste of San Antonio

Unfortunately our day in San Antonio was short lived. No pets allowed at the Alamo! So after touring the historic site we took an hour to go check out "The River Walk" before rushing back to the campground and rescuing Mango from a day alone at the trailer! Poor tortured thing! LOL! The River Walk is a network of walkways along the banks of the San Antonio River, one story below the city streets, lined with restaurants, shops and hotels. A very cool area at this time of year, with twinkling Christmas lights, and decorated taxi boats floating by with drivers dressed as Santa. The River Walk was born from a horrible flood in 1921, which took 50 lives. After many discussions of how to avoid such a tragedy again, the final plan came to fruition. A small dam and flood gate was built at the bend in the river to regulate the flow. By the mid 40's commercial development had begun, becoming what is know today as the "River Walk".
