Catch up!

Waiting out the cold front here in Fort Stockton, Texas. Thankfully today we woke up to see blue skies and a big round thing they call the sun! What a relief! Our pipes and hose have thawed and there appears to be no damage! Dodged a bullet! Tomorrow we continue on to Austin! Very excited! A big city!! So before we fall to far behind, here are a few campground highlights from the last week or so! Back in Arizona, our last stop was "Roper Lake State Park". A great campground where we had some interesting wildlife! One night while sitting by the fire, I spotted a large cat in the brush across from us! The next day we went to investigate and had something growling at us… About face, and run! We left the next day! I told the park ranger on the way out. He thought it may have been a Bob Cat. Yikes! Here are a couple pictures from the area.

Next stop was "Rockhound State Park" in New Mexico. Unfortunately we didn't stay long in NM. Winter comes quickly there and we were afraid of running into snow and ice… How ironic that we raced through to Texas to be hit by the ice storm of the year! Rockhound is aptly named as it is a favourite place for rock hunters… or "Rockhounds". The park is abundant in agates and quartz crystals.

I had to add the photo below! What campfire is complete without a club chair and ottoman! LOL!

First stop in Texas was "Balmorhea State Park". This place had it's pros and cons. It would be an amazing park to visit in the summer. It was built in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It has this huge spring fed swimming pool and canals which run through the property. The pool is about 1.75 acres and stays at 72 to 76 degrees year round.  It is about 25 feet deep and has tons of fish and even turtles! People actually take scuba diving lessons here! There are also adobe style retro cottages if you don't camp. The cons. The bathrooms. Yuk. Need to be renovated or blown up… Blown up would be my choice. Along with the large spiders that have made the building their home. Creepy. The campground itself hasn't been tended to in awhile either. Not level and the covered picnic areas are really dirty. The cottages on the other hand are currently being renovated. Ok, enough complaining. Here are some pictures.

As you can see, we are wearing shorts this day. Beautiful and warm! The very next day the ice storm hit! How the heck does that happen!?

Here is a picture below of the fellows digging the pool by hand!
